Actress and Icon, Estelle Getty passed away this morning July 22, 2008. Estelle was, of course, best remembered as Sofia on The Golden Girls. But, beyond being one of the greatest television actresses of all time, Estelle was a trailblazer for gay rights. She worked for decades to make it as an actress and never gave up. Her first big break came as Arnold’s mother in “Torch Song Trilogy”. Although she didn’t make an appearance until the last act of the play, Estelle stole the show every night and almost overnight, she was a Broadway Star!
Estelle used her fame to support the gay rights movment and stopping the AIDS epidemic was a cause close to her heart. We salute Estelle Getty for being a brilliant comedienne who never gave up on her dream. Through her portrayl of Sophia, she taught a generation of gay men to always be yourself, always speak your mind and always live life to the fullest…we just don’t have a lot of time. Goodbye Estelle and thank you for being our friend.
